Tucked away in the northwest corner of Washington State, the San Juan Islands are
surrounded by pristine waters, vistas of snow-capped mountains and an abundance of wildlife.
The number of islands that make up the archipelago varies, depending on whether it’s high or
low tide. At low tide, over 700 islands and reefs may be visible; at high tide that number is
457. About 172 islands are large enough to be named but only 4 are easily accessible from the
mainland – San Juan, Orcas, Lopez and Shaw Islands – as well as having regular
inter-island ferry services. |
 |
Whales, porpoises and dolphins can be seen in their natural habitat and there are
nearly a hundred resident orcas in the waters of the San Juans, travelling in three pods. The
best ways to get close to these majestic creatures are by joining a whale search cruise or by
enjoying a sea kayaking adventure. The best viewing times are from the beginning of May until
the end of August. The island’s animal kingdom also includes seals, sea lions, otters, deer,
wild turkeys and many nesting pairs of bald eagles. |

stream, complete with otters), The Pacific Science Center, Pike Place Market, Pioneer
Square, (take the half hour Underground walking tour for a humorous view of 1890s
Seattle) and for something completely different, ride the monorail to the new Experience
Music Project. |

This morning, take a 3 hour whale search cruise. There is every
chance of seeing these impressive animals, as apart from the resident orcas, there are

Museum near the hotel. |

Today take a three hour guided sea kayaking tour to get a seal’s eye
view of the orcas, sea lions and otters. In the afternoon, take the ferry to Orcas
