CANADA - YUKON

CANOEING THE YUKON’S RIVERS
Long or short, challenging or tranquil, we offer an array of river trips on several of the Yukon’s most beautiful rivers.  Ranging anywhere between 7 and 22 days, our guides will take you on rivers that have been an integral part of the culture and history of the Yukon for centuries.  You can paddle down the historic Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson City or make your way down the Teslin River, all without any special canoeing skills or experience.  If you are seeking a bigger challenge, you can let our experienced guides help you explore one of the more remote rivers, such as the Big Salmon, Wind, South MacMillan and Snake.
Canoeing in the Yukon
For those wishing to explore independently, we have rental canoes available.  Our Rental and Transportation Service-packages have been designed to accommodate a leisurely wilderness holiday on some of the most spectacular waterways of the north.

CANOE EXPEDITION ON THE TESLIN RIVER
10 nights
Departures from June to August
The 370 km tour (including approx. 170km on the Yukon River) through the solitude of the Teslin River is one of the most popular canoe adventures and it is especially suitable for the novice canoeist.  The well trained guides introduce the participants to the proper paddle techniques on this class I-II river.

The start of the trip is at Johnsons Crossing on the Alaska Highway, where the Teslin River winds its way through the mountains of the Southern Yukon towards the confluence with the Yukon River.  Wildlife encounters along the river are quite common, and one can expect to see moose, caribou, wolf and eagle.  During August and September, thousands of salmon spawn in the Teslin River, and grizzly bears are often seen.  In the evenings we will set up camp along the riverbanks or on gravel bars.  Meals are cooked on the open campfire and fresh Arctic grayling, salmon and northern pike may be added to the menu.  Hiking trips into the mountains and creek valleys can round out an exciting river journey.  The tour ends in Carmacks on the Yukon River where you will part from our canoes and travel with our van via the Klondike Highway back towards Whitehorse.

THE YUKON EXPLORER (GUIDED)
CANOE EXPEDITION ON THE SNAKE RIVER
21 nights
Departures in July
This canoe tour is a truly wilderness expedition through the magnificent alpine valleys of the Snake River.  The headwaters of the Snake are only accessible by float plane, and the legendary Beaver or Otter aircraft takes us through the sheer magnitude of the Mackenzie Mountains into the Duo Lakes.  Here we are about to start a challenging journey down this clear and narrow river.  The Snake is probably the finest class II+ white water river that originates in the Yukon, with a few class III rapids which are quite easy to portage.  One of the benefits of the remoteness, aside from the lack of people around, is the wildlife encounters that can be expected.  Moose, dall sheep, caribou, grizzly bear and wolf are very common in the area, and many of the animals have never seen a human being.  Plenty of time on the river has been allowed for taking fine hikes and trips of exploration into the incredible mountain ranges and for setting foot on various prominent, but unnamed peaks.  The fishing for Dolly Varden and Arctic Grayling is excellent in the Snake River and in the numerous mountain creeks.  Some 300 kilometres down river the Snake flows into the mighty Peel River, and we finish the last 200 kilometres paddling by the fish camps of the Gwitch’in Indians.  The small sub-Arctic village of Fort McPherson, the first sign of civilization, marks the end of this superb and unforgettable wilderness canoe expedition.  Our van takes us south on the Dempster Highway to Dawson City and later back to Whitehorse.

DISCOVER THE NORTH (GUIDED)
CANOE & HIKING EXPEDITION ON THE YUKON & PELLY RIVERS AND TOMBSTONE MOUNTAINS
21 nights
Departures in July and August
Do you enjoy warm, dry weather?  And you don’t like to share your time with too many mosquitoes?  Well this is the canoe tour for you!  July is a hot, dry time for this part of the country.  August and September is a good time to experience the beginning of the Indian Summer and to see the bull moose starting to rut.  The nights then are generally cooler and temperatures can occasionally dip down below freezing.  Beware of the magic of the aurora borealis.  Easy white water, paddling and relaxed drifting will be the general character of this trip.  Fishing for Artic Grayling, Northern Pike and sometimes Inconnu is good.  The Pelly River is THE hot spot for wildlife viewing.  There is a population of both Black and Grizzly Bears.  Back sloughs are home to moose and smaller wildlife such as lynx, wolverine, wolf and river otters and of course plenty of beavers, with some luck, be seen along the shores.  Along the way you will stop at the Pelly Ranch as well as at Fort Selkirk at the confluence of Pelly and the Yukon Rivers.  This former Hudson Bay trading post is now an open-air museum and you will stop there for a day to explore the various buildings as well as go for a hike to stretch those unused leg muscles.

The difficulty of the river ranges from generally flat water to class II-III white water in some parts of the Granite Canyon.  However, the experienced guides will choose a route which will not exceed class I.  The tour starts in Ross River and ends only after approximately 700 km!  The last 275 km you will paddle and drift the almighty Yukon River towards Dawson City, which was once a booming gold rush town and is known around the world through famous Jack London.  The current of both Pelly and the Yukon River is strong (7-12 kph) and therefore the long distance can be negotiated with a lot of fun even for beginners.  At the confluence of the Yukon and the Klondike Rivers you will find the settlement of Dawson City.  You will stay for two nights in Dawson, relax in a fine hotel and relive the history of the gold rush and the tales of Jack London and Robert Service.  You will be transferred up the Dempster Highway to set up camp on a camp ground near the Tombstone Mountains.  The next day’s hiking trip into this great scenery is another highlight of the tour!

THE CLASSIC CANOE EXPEDITION ON THE YUKON RIVER (GUIDED)
19, 13 or 8 nights
Departures June to September
This classic canoe trip down the Yukon from Whitehorse to Dawson City is specially tailored for visitors who like to travel far away from tourist routes, following the trail of the old history.

The tour starts in Whitehorse on the Yukon River with the compass needle set north, and we pass many relics of the historic gold rush of 1898.  The expedition travels over 700 kilometres on this mighty river, exploring several abandoned settlements such as Fort Selkirk, Hootalinqua and Biog Salmon Village.  Camps are set up on the gravel and sand banks of the might river where one can enjoy a refreshing bath in the Yukon.

Black bears are quite common in the Yukon valley and are often seen by our guests.  Watch the ridges of the cliffs along the river to spot the busy mammal.  Moose are numerous in the forested foothills, and bald eagles, nest along the river banks.  Beavers are busy getting their winter supplies in, and several times we have seen grizzly bears strolling along the shoreline.  The only major interruption to the rivers smooth journey is the might five finger Rapids, once a major navigation problem for the large paddle wheelers.  Around the camp fire we will hear about the solution found for this problem and some interesting stories about the first river travellers.  At the confluence of the Yukon and Klondike rivers we find the settlement of Dawson City, the famous gold rush town of the Yukon.
